MAKIKI VALLEY HIKE

One day we hiked the hills of Makiki Valley Nature Preserve...

...where the footing is muddy and treacherous

The trail climbs about 1,000 feet on a ridge overlooking a thick jungle

We hiked both trails, making a 4-mile loop through incredible flora and fauna

We expected to see Tarzan swinging through the banyon trees

The banyon roots making a lattice pattern This is how the banyon roots eventually
grow into the ground

A tangle of branches Walking through Hawaiian kudzu

Views of Diamond Head and Waikiki highrises from the top of the mountain

Two more beautiful wildflowers. Note the earwigs on the flower on the right.

A place to wash off the mud at trail's end A volunteer shows us stuffed indigenous birds
