| HALEAKALA |
| On a drive up to Haleakala
Volcano. From sea level to the top, it's 36 miles and 10,023 feet. |
Cyclists descend from the top -- note the
rain gear for the unpredictable weather |
| |
| It was in the low 30s, so we
jumped out of the car for some quick photos. The National Park includes
28,000 acres and one of the largest
extinct calderas. There are 10 observatories at the top. |

| Looking down into the crater
-- an impressive caldera full of cinder cones and a rainbow of colors |
| |
The air quality is one of the
highest in the world, so the colors and details of the caldera
come into
crisp view after the clouds blow away |
| |
| At the highest points of Haleakala
-- it may not look like it, but it's freezing
out here |
| |
| Silversword plants, one of the
unique plants to grow at this high elevation |

| The valley below peeks through the clouds |
Looking down on a rainbow, that's a first |

the way down the mountain |

| SUNRISE PROTEA FARM |
| A picnic lunch at the sunny and
warm Protea Farm, about half-way down Haleakala |
| |
| The farm grows and sells a wide variety of
protea plants |
