bike Maui

During our stay in Hawaii, Geno rented a bike and got in 3 satisfying days of cycling. Maui is very bike-friendly and you can find everything from challenging roads in the "up-country" area to some easy beach riding along the ocean.

UPCOUNTRY

On the leeward slopes of Mt. Haleakala, about 5 miles from the ocean, Geno did a great 40-mile ride through quiet, spectacular countryside with views of the ocean.

Ride start at Rice Park, south of Kula Meandering Kula Road heading toward Ulupalakua

The Fong store in Keokea -- and my favorite little bungalow overlooking the ocean

South road to Hana. The road eventually turns to gravel so there is very little traffic.

Views of a couple cinder cones sprouting next to the ocean

Visited a small park dedicated to Sun Yat Sen, the first president of the Republic of China
who was educated in Hawaii

Lions guarding the entrance into the park

Tedeschi Winery, a great place for a rest stop. And the wines are pretty good, too.

Grounds of Tedeschi Winery

An AWESOME road!! The most squiggly, rolling road I've ever been on. And no traffic, either.

Numerous cinder cones along this road This must be a joke since there were no fruit trees to be found. But I like the message anyhow.

The road winds through a tunnel of these wildflowers

The road rock-and-rolls toward the north side of the island Some kind of bamboo-like century plant

It's also cowboy country out here

St. Mary's Church and views toward the cloud-shrouded mountains

Grandma's Coffeehouse in Keokea -- great place for a cup-o-joe and pastries Keokea is an neat, artsy little town
