Mt Hood--Gunsight Ridge Hike

Dick Fraschetti, Ed Walker, and Geno tackled the rugged Goodspeed Trail in the Sugarloaf Ridge State Park in Sonoma County. They climbed approximately 2,000' from the trailhead to the summit of Mt. Hood, elevation 2,730'.

The hike began on a foggy, overcast day but the skies cleared up, sorta, when the trio approached the top. From the Gunsight Ridge overlook, they enjoyed basking in the warm sun and lunch with a hawk's eye view of the Valley of the Moon and Santa Rosa.

The Goodspeed Trail transcends the mountainside of Mt. Hood. It takes you up a steady switchback climb starting from a dense forest of redwood trees, moss-covered rocks, and ferns of the valley floor through bright red Manzanita, Holly berry shrubs at the lower elevations, through clusters of Bay trees, Coast Live Oaks, and Dougas Firs as you near the top. The rugged trail traverses steep open grass-covered slopes with dramatic views of the surrounding hills, meadows, and valleys.
