Arches National Park: Delicate Arch Sunset Hike

One of the things on our checklist was to hike to Delicate Arch for a sunset viewing. Delicate Arch is a famous Utah icon and is found on their license plates. Well, we were not the only ones who wished to do this. We joined a crowd of 150+ people to watch the the sun set over Delicate Arch.

The parade of hikers marching out to the arch

Just about everyone had to have their picture taken in front of the arch

The gathering crowd There is a big bowl in front of the arch so everyone has a good seat

Well, here's my sunset photo

P.S. In one tragic ending to this beautiful day, a fellow photographer dropped her camera and everyone watched the camera go tumbling down into the bowl shattering into pieces. There was one massive loud groan. We hope she at least went down and retrieved the memory card.

Potash Road / Shafer Trail Mountain Bike Ride

The grand finale of our trip was one incredible mountain bike ride on Potash Road and Shafer Trail from the Colorado River to the rim of Canyonlands. This was a 34-mile RT ride with over 2,1000' of elevation gain. TOTALLY AWESOME!!

The ride starts in Potash, pop. 4, next to the Colorado River

Passing the salt ponds. Even these were beautiful. The scenery is gorgeous and we aren't even in the national park

Squirrelly riding through red sand About half-way up, the road follows a rim above the river

Finding goblins in Canyonlands

Mushroom caps above the river

The famous gooseneck below Deadhorse State Park

A crew was filming a French movie called "The Client" Guess it'll be a western?

The coup de grace...a 3-mile climb up the Shafer Trail Some of it exceeded 18%

Looking down at Shafer Canyon where we came from Occasionally encountering jeeps on the Shafer Trail

At the top of the world A great place to have lunch

World travelers . . . we met 3 loaded cyclists descending the Shafer Trail. This international group was riding from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, the tip of South America. They started out separately and met on the road. L-R, Takuto (Jpn), Christian (Switz), and Chris (Can). Read about their journey on › Christian's website. At right, Chris and Herb race down the Shafer Trail.

Red rocks glow in the setting sun on the return trip

Don't blow too hard, Herb!!
