| After Zion, we drove to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon where we spent 4 nights camping in the Park. Fires on the plateau prevented us from visiting Cape Royale, but we did get in a great hike down into the Canyon on the North Kaibab Trail and a mountain bike ride on the Rainbow Rim Trail just outside the park. | |

| The elusive Kaibab squirrel, with long white tail and tufted ears, is found only in the pine forests of North Rim and nowhere else in the world. | |
North Kaibab Trail Hike Another major high point of the trip was the hike down into the Canyon via the North Kaibab Trail. Due to a late start, we were able to hike only 3½ miles down into the Canyon to the Eye of the Needle, which is about one-third the way to Phantom Ranch. It was still a strenuous hike with an elevation gain of 2,400'. |
