Grand Canyon National Park

After Zion, we drove to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon where we spent 4 nights camping in the Park. Fires on the plateau prevented us from visiting Cape Royale, but we did get in a great hike down into the Canyon on the North Kaibab Trail and a mountain bike ride on the Rainbow Rim Trail just outside the park.

Vast and flat Marble Plateau seen from Imperial Point Warm glow of North Rim Lodge

Fires made for spectacular sunsets on the North Rim

Dick Clothier, with no clothier, a fellow Sac Wheelmen, was camped at North Rim. He was on an Adventure Cycling Tour with Ed Delano. Sorry no pic of Ed.

The elusive Kaibab squirrel, with long white tail and tufted ears, is found only in the pine forests of North Rim and nowhere else in the world.

North Kaibab Trail Hike

Another major high point of the trip was the hike down into the Canyon via the North Kaibab Trail. Due to a late start, we were able to hike only 3½ miles down into the Canyon to the Eye of the Needle, which is about one-third the way to Phantom Ranch. It was still a strenuous hike with an elevation gain of 2,400'.

Gazing down into the Canyon from near the trailhead

The neat part of the hike is walking through geologic time defined by the various sandstone formations

The white Kaibab formation rims the top of the Canyon. . . . . . passing the red Coconino formation

Passing through the Supai Tunnel Some kind of donut shaped fossil

Herb looks down to the Redwall Bridge

One of the few flat sections of the hike is crossing the Redwall Bridge

Stepping aside for a passing mule train.
Mules are very sure-footed and there has been no death of a rider from a mule falling over the edge.

Talk about an edgy trail. There's a several hundred feet drop-off.

Kinda scary but what a fantastic hike! Taking a break at the Eye of the Needle,
our turnaround point

Rainbow Rim Trail Ride

You can mountain bike on National Forest Service land outside the National Park We did a 25-mile ride on the Rainbow Rim Trail with some of the trail overlooking the Grand Canyon

Super views of Canyon

Riding on the Rim, how cool is that!?

Herb enjoys a bagel and ham sandwich with awesome views One of several overlook access points
