Devil's Kitchen

The hike to Devil's Kitchen is the signature hike in Warner Valley and is accessible only from the Drakesbad Guestranch. It is an easy 4-mile hike RT and climbs less than 1000'.

Devil's Kitchen is one of Lassen's several hydrothermal areas offering bubbling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and boiling waters.

Mt. Lassen

Our final major hike was to the 10,457' summit of Mt. Lassen, a 2000' climb in only 2 miles. Although rated a very strenuous hike, Mt. Lassen is one of the most popular hikes with thousands of people successfully summiting the mountain every year. We saw families with very young kids (6-9 years old) and senior citizens (even older than us) at the summit. Seeing this sorta deflated our accomplishment.

Lassen Peak formed 27,000 years ago as a volcanic vent on Brokeoff Volcano's northern flank. It is considered one of the world's largest plug dome volcanoes.
